Documenters/Documentalistes Canada is looking for a dynamic and highly organized Network Lead to join its leadership team.
The Network Lead collaborates with the leadership team to grow and strengthen the Documenters Canada network. This role focuses on building and maintaining strong relationships with partners across multiple regions, fostering a connected and collaborative network community, and supporting the expansion of new sites. The Network Lead also plays a key role in promoting the network by contributing to communications and outreach efforts, and supports fundraising, planning, and impact tracking.
Location: Remote (Canada)
Hours: 20 hours/week, on average, with some flexibility week to week
Compensation: $32/hour
About Documenters/Documentalistes Canada:
Documenters/Documentalistes Canada trains and pays community members to attend public meetings, take notes, and share them in their communities, in partnership with our publishing partners. Their notes are fact-checked and accessible to all. We are committed to equipping people to engage in their community, improving the amount and quality of local news and information, and promoting accountability of elected representatives. We have two current sites, one about to launch, and a fourth in progress. At each site, we work with partners in postsecondary educational institutions to help run the project, community partners to ensure our work is valuable in each community where we operate, and with media partners to edit, fact-check, and publish our notes. Our network of newsrooms and community partners is spread across four regions in Canada.

Responsibilities:
Relationship-building and network development: 25%
- Nurtures ongoing relationships with established media, academic, and community partners at our existing sites in Toronto and Montréal, our about-to-launch site in Crowsnest Pass (Alberta), and a future site in the Maritime provinces.
- Convenes and facilitates a network-wide community of practice every 4 months.
- Encourages ongoing communication among network members and nurtures a feeling of community.
- Organizes network events, gatherings and workshops for network members, as needed.
- Meets new and prospective partners to offer guidance on the implementation of Documenters Canada.
- Develops strategic partnerships at the local, provincial and national levels that support the mission and goals of Documenters Canada.
Networking and promotion: 30%
- Represents and promotes Documenters Canada at networking events and conferences.
- Designs and publishes our newsletter, The Documenters Circle, every six weeks.
- Promotes Documenters Canada on social media
- Writes content for our website, documenterscanada.ca (blog posts, announcements, press releases).
- Updates the website, as needed.
- Writes op-eds and analysis articles that align with Documenters Canada’s mission for general, professional, and academic publics. Academic presentations or publishing is a possibility if the candidate is interested.
Fundraising and organizational management: 30%
- Researching network-wide grants and preparing applications, alongside the leadership team, to support the sustainability and growth of Documenters Canada.
- Support site-specific grant applications, as needed.
- Supports the leadership team with budgeting and planning, as needed.
- Works toward the long-term sustainability of the Documenters Canada network, both financially and organizationally.
- Establishes relevant structures and workflows to promote sustainability.
Impact development 15%
- Reports on Documenters Canada’s impact at regular intervals.
- Helps with setting and tracking the achievement of our goals, in partnership with local sites.
- Communicates about impact.
- Strategizes about ways to increase impact.
- Tracks developments in civic education, community-centred journalism, and other related fields, to help develop new directions and ideas for the project, enabling us to add directions and focuses that better fulfill the mission, as needed.
Profile sought:
- Record of successfully leading and managing projects and/or start-ups.
- Experience in one or more of the following fields: media, journalism, communications, non-profits, advocacy work, civic engagement, community-building, social impact, civic tech, public policy, organizing/mobilization.
- Since we have partners in both English- and French-speaking communities, we strongly encourage bilingual candidates to apply. A candidate who is comfortable in spoken English and French but requires assistance in writing would also be considered.
Interests and vision:
- Interested in local and independent media and the role community members can play in it.
- Interest in local government and public affairs.
- Strongly believes in the importance of local, civic information for a healthy democracy.
- Curious and open to learning about new ways to engage citizens in the co-production of civic information at local public meetings.
- Interest in academic research or a publishing record is not necessary, but is considered an asset.
- Experience working within the framework of projects, start-ups, young organizations or non-profits: a strong asset.
Soft skills:
- Leadership, sense of initiative.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills: This person represents Documenters Canada Network nationally.
- Ability to see long-term and plan strategically.
- Highly-organized.
Technical skills:
- Bilingualism (French/English) is strongly preferred: the position involves managing external communications in French and English, and supporting local partners in Montréal, Toronto, Crowsnest Pass, the Maritimes, and potentially elsewhere in francophone and anglophone communities.
- Knowledge of the Google Suite/Workspace.
- Organizational skills: budgeting, project management, stakeholder management.
- Experience with LinkedIn: an asset.
- Experience with newsletter design tools (Kit.com or others): an asset.
